Surprising cucurbit cultivated from the terraces of the Nile, the luffa aegyptiaca is harvested when ripe, then carefully cleaned and dried. Its resistant fibers, its very hydrophilic alveolar texture, and its slightly rough touch make it an ideal sponge.
