The History of Authentic Aleppo Soap

As an intangible cultural heritage of the Middle East, Aleppo soap reveals its multiple virtues dating back approximately 3,500 years. It gained popularity in Europe during the medieval Crusades, where soap makers began producing it in Spain, Italy, and Marseille.

In its traditional formula, olive oil meets laurel berry oil to create a super-fatted soap that is safer, gentler, and more nourishing. According to the classic recipe, olive oil is placed in an underground vat with water and vegetable-based lye, then heated for several days, up to boiling, in a copper cauldron. Towards the end of saponification, laurel berry oil is added to the mixture to enrich the authentic Aleppo soap.

The resulting paste is spread on the ground and covered with wax paper. Artisans flatten its thickness before cutting it into blocks and stamping the Aleppo soap loaves. Once dry, these loaves are stored in a cellar for 6 months to 3 years.

After this sun-protected drying period, Aleppo soap is ready to be used as part of a skincare routine (for face and body) or a natural household cleaning routine. Its authenticity can be recognized by its dual color: brown-beige on the outside and olive green on the inside.
